People of all ages seek acupuncture for a wide range of reasons. The British Acupuncture Council produces fact sheets to provide accurate and unbiased general information for a variety of conditions. They provide summaries of research and how acupuncture may be beneficial.
A list of direct links to fact sheets on the BAcC website are shown below near the bottom of this page, but whatever reason you are seeking acupuncture, give me a call to discuss it. I offer a free, no obligation, phone consultation.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine which has evolved in the Far East over the last 2000 years, but has only become included in general medicine in the West in the last 30 years. It involves inserting very fine stainless steel needles into specific points on the body with the aim of promoting the healing process, relieving the symptoms of certain conditions and restoring health and energy.
The traditional Chinese medicine explanation of how acupuncture works is that the needles regulate the body's vital energy called ‘qi’. The acupuncturist needs to be sensitive to this energy and either stimulate or reduce various points on the body using needles.
A possible scientific explanation is that the stimulation of deep sensory nerves is thought to induce rhythmic discharges that cause the release of endogenous opioids and oxytocin.
Whatever the explanation, acupuncture provides highly effective symptomatic relief for many patients.
Traditional Chinese medicine focuses on the person as a whole (body and mind) and seeks to enhance their natural healing response rather than suppressing symptoms. This different perspective means acupuncture is often used alongside conventional medicine. It can be used to improve well-being at times when the body is under stress and improve general health.
The Acupuncture Sessions
The sessions will be tailored to your individual needs to ensure the best possible outcome. Frequency of treatment is usually 1 - 2 sessions per week, depending on symptom severity. Once improvement is seen then the frequency is reduced. Generally a course of treatment is 8 - 10 sessions. Changes should be noticed in 4 - 6 sessions with improvement by the 8th session.
Acupuncture sessions cost £60 per session.
I am a licensed acupuncturist with a BSc(Hons) in Acupuncture from the International College of Oriental Medicine in West Sussex.
